Walter Leslie Wilmshurst

(June, 22 1867 - July, 10 1939)

William Leslie WilmshurstWBro Walter Leslie Wilmshurst ("WL Wilmshurst") Wilmshurst wrote many books, among them two that might be among the best Masonic classics: The Meaning of Masonry (1922), and its sequel, The Masonic Initiation (1924). These works, with their powerfully spiritual vision of Freemasonry as a "sacramental system," have been an inspiration to Masons for nearly a century. They were also the impulse behind a new lodge, The Lodge of Living Stones No. 4957 (UGLE 1927)—an important precursor to the traditional observance lodge model and an inspiration to Esoterika Lodge No. 316 as well as many other lodges around the World.

Born in Chichester, WL Wilmshurst was initiated as a Mason in Huddersfield Lodge (UGLE) in 1889, having moved to the town to become a solicitor, for a time becoming president of the Huddersfield Law Society.
